Making it water-repellent, tear-resistant and paper-soft.
Converse follows on from its recently-dropped snakeskin and lenticular Chuck 70 Hi iterations with yet another boundary-breaking pair, this time around cladding its classic silhouette in DuPont Tyvek.
Tyvek is a water-repellent, tear-resistant and paper-soft material developed by DuPont and is used widely in fields ranging from medical to construction. You’ve probably come across it most frequently by using a Tyvek mailing envelope, or perhaps you’ve gone full Naomi Campbell and bought one of its PPE suits.
Regardless, the material now finds itself dressing up as a Converse Chuck 70 Hi. On the lateral side, you’ll find two kinds of Tyvek branding — one looking like the sheets that can be used for construction purposes, and the other looking like its shipping boxes. The medial sports a red “cut here”-esque look alongside oversized Tyvek branding, while the typical All Star roundel now appears washed-out and barely visible.
Other unique additions include a change to the sole unit, looking as if the Tyvek box’s “tear here” strip runs the perimeter of the midsole. There’s a singular blue eyelet on either side of the shoe, a blue leather heel stripe, and a washed-out license plate on the rear of the heel.
The Converse Chuck 70 Hi DuPont Tyvek edition is available in limited quantities and can be purchased at stockists such as Sivasdescalzo now for €110 EUR (approx. $133 USD).
