Showrunner Mike White shared where he would like to base the next series and if Jennifer Coolidge, or any other stars, would return.
We still have a few more days before we check into The White Lotus again for its second season, this time set at its luxury resort in Sicily. But if the new iteration – which sees the return of the iconic Jennifer Coolidge and new additions such as Aubrey Plaza, Michael Imperioli, F. Murray Abraham, Theo James and more – is anywhere near as shocking, addictive and popular as the first season, we’re bound to get a third season of the hit HBO show in the future.
Speaking at the red carpet for the season two premiere, showrunner Mike White told Deadline that he literally only turned in the last episode of the latest season the night prior and so understandably hadn’t had much time to think about what’s coming next. When asked if a third season was coming, he replied “I don’t know, ask Casey Bloys,” referring to the CEO of HBO. However, he did give us some ideas as to where he would want to take the show in the future.
“I think it’d be fun to maybe go to a whole different continent. You know, we did Europe, maybe Asia, or something crazy like that. That would be fun,” Mike shared. When asked about whether he sees characters from past seasons returning, and what made him bring back Jennifer Coolidge and Jon Gries (who played her lover from the first season) for the second, Mike said: “Well, Jennifer is my friend and everybody loved her in the first season, and I was like, ‘I can’t go to Italy without Jennifer.’ And maybe that’s still the case. Like, maybe you can’t go to Japan without Jennifer, either. There are so many fun actors we’ve worked with so far, so it’s just kind of like who’s available and who will do it and how it all works out. I definitely think it’s fun to bring somebody back from some of the seasons.”
Maybe that means the next season will see the return of blasé mean girls Olivia and Paula, played by Sydney Sweeney and Brittany O’Grady, causing havoc in the lives of their fellow holidaymakers as they travel through Thailand on their gap year. Maybe we will find out what happened to Lani, the White Lotus employee from the first episode of season one, who was desperate for work and pretending she wasn’t nine months pregnant. What’s she up to these days? Or maybe we'll just get even more Jennifer Coolidge shouting “woo-hoo!”. We barely know what’s in store for season two, so season three is an even further stretch.
